Next B777X novelty gets green light: folding wingtips approved

The Federal Aviation Administration approved the folding wingtips of the coming Boeing 777X on May 18, 2018. The same day, Boeing announced that the wingtips entered the assembly line in Everett plant. The state-of-the-art technology never seen on commercial aircraft, however, has already been seen elsewhere.

Several ex-employees blame Global Air for Cubana Air crash

The crashed aircraft was operated by Cuba’s national carrier Cubana de Aviacion, but leased from Mexican Global Air – a company, that has already been fined $1 million for irregularities in aircraft inspection. Former employees of both companies say this incident was far from stand-alone.

Another executive shakeup: United’s CFO abruptly steps down

United Airlines announced on May 17, 2018, that its Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Andrew Levy is stepping down after serving less than two years in the post. Gerry Laderman, a senior United executive, is named acting CFO. The airline’s chief says the departure will not affect the carrier’s existing financial guidance, though operational performance falls short of its U.S. rivals, American and Delta airlines.

Singapore Airlines to bring SilkAir under its wing post 2020

Singapore Airlines (SIA) announced on May 18, 2018, that its regional brand, SilkAir, will undergo a significant aircraft cabin upgrade starting 2020, a revamp which will ultimately see the carrier being merged into its parent company. The news comes only a year after SIA folded TigerAir under its subsidiary Scoot. Although the newest merger is not “a consolidation exercise”, says airline’s CEO, why is it doing it this time?
